TRACK09 / DISTÀNCIA /

Mas allá de tus labios Del sol y las estrellas Contigo en la distancia Amado mío estoy

Contigo en la distancia – Original bolero-hit of Lucho Gatica and performed by Christina Aguilera or Luís Miguel, among others.

"Contigo en la distancia amada mía..." goes a 1952 bolero sung by Lucho Gatica that lit up middle-class homes in Mexico, a country with around 25.8 million inhabitants and a population density of barely 13.1 people per square kilometre. Physical distance has always been a concept that appears in this country's cultural expressions. But, undoubtedly, the distance to which this and other songs refer has an important emotional meaning. Once again, just like in Experiencia, we witness a cultural agreement that in the lyrical context endows the term "distance" with sentimental connotations or, more accurately, nostalgic.

Ratlingmayer, an Austrian author living in Olot, was asked to write the lyrics of Distancia. His status as an emigrant inspired him to compose a song about nostalgia and dissatisfaction; the distance that separates him from Austria makes him as sad as what separates him from Olot when he travels to his native land.

For the visual part of the videoclip Russo presents a tableau-vivant, introducing a new genre in the Sonesnat mix, the pictorial genre, and referring by extension to the tradition of video creations featuring fixed shots and contemplative interpretations, which have their foots in the experimental film Sleep by Andy Warhol. The hieratic image fosters ideas around the moon as an icon of what is unattainable yet desirable (the arrival at the moon is an ongoing obsession in the history of mankind). This videoclip manages to transmit Radlingmayer's reflection about the frustration of distance.

In a shameless and conscious way, Distancia presents us with a cultural cliché resulting from the combination of an idealised landscape with a heartfelt ballad sung by the singer of Glasgow 15.

ORIGINAL LYRICS

Author: Claus Radlingmayer

TELL ME, WHERE WILL YOU BE

WHEN YOU CLOSE YOUR EYES TONIGHT?

DO YOU THINK YOU'VE GONE TOO FAR,

YOU'VE LEFT YOUR FRIENDS BEHIND?

SOMETIMES YOU DRINK CHAMPAGNE...

AND SOMETIMES YOUR TEARS!

SO YOU'D BETTER WATCH OUT BABY...

THE HOLE WILL BE TOO DEEP!!

TELL ME, WHAT WILL YOU SAY

WHEN YOU OPEN UP YOUR MOUTH?

DO YOU THINK YOU GOT A VOICE?

TOO LESS WORDS YOU GAVE!

YOU'VE NOT EVEN MADE A NOISE!

YOU THINK THEY'LL GIVE YOU NOTHING NOW,

BUT THEY STILL GOT SO MUCH FOR YOU -

ANOTHER MUDDY DAY GOES BY!

THEY'LL WATCH YOU FROM ABOVE

TREAT YOU WITH GLOVES

IT'S YOU, WHO LETS THEIR DISTANCE GROW!

THEY'LL WATCH YOU FROM ABOVE

TREAT YOU WITH GLOVES, TREAT YOU WITH GLOVES

WON'T YOU EVER COME BACK, THEY SAY

SO PLEASE COME BACK - WE NEED YOU HERE!

THE STARS ARE FAR AWAY - WE NEED YOU HERE!

CAN'T REACH OUT TO CATCH - WE NEED YOU HERE!

THE DISTANCE GETS TOO BIG - WE NEED YOU HERE!
